kharpocho

Skardu – the heart of Karakoram and world’s most wanted mountain station is truly a land of wonders. Amongst uncountable mountain splendors, its historic and cultural attractions are unique as well. The ancient Kharpocho Fort (King of Forts) is one of these attractions which reflects the past and culture of Baltistan.

Khopocho is situated on a high and broad rock. It was constructed by Ali Sher Khan Anchan, a strong ruler of Baltistan who ruled till the end of the 16th century. A solid main gate made by wood and iron still looks unbreakable. There are different sections for residence, servants and guests. All sections of this fort are made by stones. Wooden doors, pillars and windows were decorated by traditional carving artwork. Strong boundary walls with a number of watch towers were built to guard the fort from any outside attacks. The location, solid stone made walls and the Indus helped this fort to resist the enemies for a long time.

It’s really worth to spare some time out of adventure to explore this unique building. A visit to Kharpoche is interesting from historical, architectural, cultural and aesthetical point of views. The whole Skardu city, sandy desert, popular trees and wide Indus River look beautiful from the heights of this fort.
